Second Chances Chances Are Series Book 1 edition by Tess St John Romance eBooks
Pretty good, but not great. Murboyd has written a very fair, three-star review for this book. The one-star review for this book is ridiculous and doesn't seem accurate. This book is fairly well written, the premise of a girl running from her abusive father and getting married for protection, then needing to be protected again when her elderly husband dies is fairly interesting.Emma and Drake are both very likable, and there's a large cast of supporting characters to provide plenty of story. I enjoyed Emma's relationship with her first husband, and then her developing romance with Drake. But there's quite a bit of repetition, and the conflict with her villainous father was drawn out for too long. This book probably would have been better if it was shorter with the repetitive bits deleted.

Second Chances Chances Are Series Book 1 edition by Tess St John Romance eBooks Reviews
This is a perfectly acceptable old-fashioned romance. The very beginning starts off with an intriguing premise, being locked in a room by an abusive father and needing someone to help her before her father sells her off. I enjoyed her rescue. After that, it slows down. The waiting for the family to arrive for the reading of the will (and since we all know from the blurb that her elderly husband dies, I don't think this is a spoiler) could have - and probably should have - been shortened, although I understand what the author was trying to do. We are supposed to watch the growing relationship, and to a certain extent it works. Also, we got hit over the head with why 'he couldn't love her and she couldn't love him, this was going nowhere, they were only friends'. That theme was repeated far too often.
IMHO, I thought it picked up a LOT once the entire family arrived. After that the tension built, and I actually found myself reading to the end in one long stretch. I enjoyed her father's villainy, the kind of character you love to hate. My favorite part was the guards, and I really did enjoy all the byplay and skullduggery, bad guys or not. The reason I gave it 3 stars instead of more is that it did become repetitious, and at the very end misunderstanding piled on misunderstanding. I enjoyed it up to a point, but after a while it strained my credulity.
All in all, the writing was quite good despite the minor defects. It also was one of the better proofread books as far as typos goes. I'm not sure there were any. If there were, I don't remember ever noticing them.
Second Chances by Tess St. John is a beautiful story of the healing power of love, with just enough danger and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Emma, Lady Easton, is kind, proud, and strong. She's been nursemaid to her elderly husband, Harmon, for five years. He'd rescued her from marriage to a cruel man, a man her father had chosen. Emma is joined at Harmon's death bed by Lord Drake, a man who has been like a son to Harmon. To further protect Emma from her heartless father who will again try to force her into marriage, Harmon asks Lord Drake to marry Emma. Both Lord Drake, who is mourning the death of his wife two years earlier, and Emma refuse.
During the course of the story, as Lord Drake fights to protect Emma from her father, Emma and Drake fall in love. Drake is still suffering over the loss if his wife and feels guilt that he can love another woman. Emma is afraid to acknowledge her love for Drake. She fears he still loves his wife. Because Emma is not yet 21, her father tries to take control over her life. He has already found another husband for her, an older man who will pay a lot of money for Emma. But Emma will not let her father control her. She fights for her independence, and for the freedom to marry the man she chooses.
The setting of Second Chances, the English countryside, peopled with lords and ladies, is engaging. The unfolding love story and the trust that develops between Drake and Emma is heartwarming. Second Chances grabbed me from the first page. This is the first book in the Chances Are series. I can't wait to read the others.
I read this book thinking it would be a nice change from my usual books but did I get a surprise. Not only is this book rich in descriptions but it also harkens to a time long past, the stuff of dreams. The plot is well developed and the action is well documented. The characters are easy to relate to for the time they are in easily recognizable. This was a very lovely story and I intend to read the other books as well..
Second Chances **spoiler**
By Tess St. John
A terrified Lady Emma Easton is watching her beloved husband die. Even though he is old enough to be her grandfather, Harmon is the man who saved her from the clutches of her treacherous father, Stephen Kerr, when she was a mere fifteen.
Lord Harold Drake, a long time Easton family friend, still mourns the young wife who died giving birth to two year old Samantha, his only reason for living. He and Emma have been friends for the five years she has been Harmon's wife. After Harmon's death, he discovers her deepest fear, and resolves to protect her from Kerr's machinations.
Drake finds his feelings for Emma are beginning to go deeper than rescuer and friend. When Harmon's estranged children arrive for the reading of the Will, the unexpected arrival of Emma's father, and his announcement, throws the family into chaos. He has literally made Emma his prisoner. How will Drake protect her with guards watching twenty-four hours a day?
Second Chances is a riveting story of manipulation, fear and love. Once you pick up the book, it's not easy to put it down. The characters are strong and well developed. The plot is solid. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and look forward to Ms. St. John's next one.
